Warfare and cattle rustling among pastoralists in the arid and semi-arid areas of northeastern Kenya date back well into pre-colonial times. The border between the Samburu and Pokot communities has been plagued by perennial fighting over dwindling pasture and consequent retaliatory attacks. Missionary Jeremiah Akoto writes: "On Friday the 7th of August, in the morning, the first thing I did was to call FUM Africa Ministries Director John Muhanji. I explained to him the situation on the ground and requested for his advice as well as his assistance. I thank God that Brother John asked me to take Stanley to Friends Lugulu Mission Hospital (FLMH) as fast as I could, and he directed me to see the hospital administrator when I arrived."
