An Enduring Truth

Image of tea lights.

Throughout our history, the people known as Friends (or Quakers) keep rediscovering an essential and enduring truth: There is one who speaks to our most basic needs and most significant hopes—Christ Jesus the Lord. Both individually and communally, we are learning to know and follow the Voice that guides us in the way we should go. Together, we seek to understand and obey that truth which sets us free. As a people, we share in the experience of that powerful life which makes all things new. Maybe you are searching for an authentic and transforming faith and community to call home—if so, come in and join us as we seek to know and follow Christ.

Lindi Friends School

For many years Lindi Friends School has been a refuge of hope and joy for the children of Kibera, a large urban slum in Nairobi. The school was established in 2005 by Friends in Nairobi, who were called to serve the impoverished families living in Kibera. Today, Lindi Friends School has nearly 340 students in its nursery and primary programs. Many of our graduates pass the national exams, which qualifies them to go on to secondary school.

FUM Visits Ciudad Victoria

On November 27, 2023, Iglesia de Los Amigos Ciudad Victoria celebrated their 150th anniversary. It was a time of joyful celebration and sorrow as they remembered many of their ancestors that are no longer among us. During the service, the youngest family member went up to share how many generations their family had been in the church. Most of the church had been members for three to five generations. There were many tears among the attenders as they remembered their great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles praying in that sanctuary, or weddings, funerals, and baby dedications.

Baragoi Friends Church a Beacon of Hope

In Kenya, Baragoi is a name which inspires fear when mentioned—it is a place that outsiders associate with death, aggressiveness, and unfriendliness. With a nickname like “valley of death,” it is easy to imagine that the moment you step into Baragoi you will be killed.Baragoi is in Samburu County, at least a two- to three-hour drive high on the plains above Maralal.

A Response to the Lindi School Fire

Friends from the Lindi School, Nairobi Yearly Meeting, and Friends United Meeting are making plans for returning the Lindi School to functioning. The immediate plan is to have students resume classes on Monday. Two classes will be held in temporary structures on site, several classes will relocate to the Kibria Friends Church, and the students who are preparing to take the national examination will be integrated with the Friends School Ngong Road. A long-term plan is being developed for reconstruction. Given that the fire destroyed all books, school supplies, kitchen equipment, and furnishings, FUM has released $9000 from the Solidarity Fund to provide an immediate response. Friends who want to support this emergency response are invited to contribute

Thirty Days of Prayer - Day Twenty Three

As One Who Lays Down Their Life For Others Friends derive our name from the Scripture passage John 15:15: “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” When reading verse fifteen in isolation, there are no stipulations or directives—we are Jesus’ friends simply because he says so.

Thirty Days of Prayer - Day Twenty Two

GATHERED IN CHRIST - As One Who Abides Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:4-5 NRSV)

Thirty Days of Prayer - Day Eighteen

The Psalmist says that, “it’s good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity. This attracts God’s blessing (Psalm 133).
