Friends United Press received word last week that Renovaré—an international organization dedicated to Christian spiritual formation—will be using The Journal and Major Essays of John Woolman for an upcoming Book Club study. With Richard Foster’s input, Renovaré selected the Phillips Moulton edited version, which Friends United Press publishes. This book club will lead approximately 1,800 people through the study, and it will be facilitated by Dr. Jon Kershner.

The Sugar Grove meetinghouse at Plainfield, Indiana, served as home to both a local meeting and the yearly meetinghouse for the former Western Yearly Meeting of Conservative Friends (1877–1962). When this Conservative (Wilburite) Yearly Meeting was laid down in 1962, the local meeting continued independently until 1968 at which time the meetinghouse and burial grounds were given to the orthodox/Gurneyite Western Yearly Meeting, along with a large endowment for its maintenance.

Several years ago, I was inspired by the one of ten in the Gospel account, so I started the spiritual practice of “returning.” On a sheet of paper, I counted my many blessings, identifying places that were transformative in my life and people who have influenced and encouraged me along the way. My list became quite long. Then, when possible, I returned to those places and people to simply say, “Thank you.” I have had opportunities to return to my childhood church in Burundi, teachers, family members, pastors, colleagues, high school, friends, the youth camp where I answered the call to ministry, and other places of blessings.
