May—Friends Church Kenya Ratifies Unifying Constitution

The Friends Church Kenya (FCK) inaugurated its formal constitution in an auspicious ceremony held in Poroko-Highland Yearly Meeting. The ratification took place after an intensive development process that involved representatives from all Yearly Meetings in Kenya. The Yearly Meeting representatives participated in a robust and dynamic discussion over several meetings, ultimately arriving at the completed document that was approved and launched in April during the FCK Triennial.

The constitution is an important document within the Kenyan Yearly Meetings as it unifies and showcases steps toward strengthening FCK as a national Quaker organization in Kenya. Being endorsed and ratified by a legal team, the document not only aligns with the values, vision, and mission of Quakers in Kenya, but also unifies all twenty-three Yearly Meetings through their participation in the process, and clearly defines the roles of the clergy and the church as the body of Christ.

The constitution launching process was witnessed and supported by Friends United Meeting through the participation of FUM’s Assistant Presiding Clerk Hastings Ozwara and Assistant Recording Clerk Lorna Mumelo, as well as John Muhanji, Director of African Ministries, and Robert Wafula, Principal of Friends Theological College. Their presence underscored FUM’s commitment to the strengthening of FCK and the broader Quaker mission in Kenya and Africa.
