Amigos House Founded in Richmond

Friends United Meeting and Richmond (Indiana) Iglesia Amigos will be hosting a series of Saturday work days to prepare a new house for refugees and other immigrants in Richmond. The house will initially be used to solve the housing needs of some of the refugees who have arrived from Cuba in recent months. The vision for Amigos House is that it will be used to welcome Spanish-speaking immigrants—Cubans as well as those of other nationalities—into the Richmond community. We hope that by the middle of the summer, one of the Cuban families can move in to the house. The house, at 908 North Eighteenth Street in Richmond, needs some upgrades and cosmetic work. Work days on the Saturdays listed below will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and refreshments and lunch will be served.

  • Saturday, May 11, identify trash and cut up carpet.
  • Saturday, May 25, dump trash and begin house repairs.
  • Saturday, June 15, continue house repairs.
  • Saturday, June 22, finish house repairs.
  • Saturday, July 6, deep cleaning and celebration.

We hope to end with a celebration with music and food on the last Saturday (July 6).If you are in Richmond, Indiana, or the surrounding area, and would like to volunteer to work on the house, you may contact Global Ministries Coordinator Karla Jay at karlaj@fum.org . We would love to have you participate in this ministry of hospitality.
